Whenever a student is struggling in a course there should be a better system to help the student do better. A lot of students aren't mature enough to recognize that hard work at anything will produce positive results. So it may be up to the teacher to help a student recognize that. If a student is struggling in a course the teacher should take the first step in setting up private help sessions and what not. I know it should be the students responsibility to take of their own education but many don't have role models that teach them what hard work is.

To recognize what hard work and persistence can do prepares anyone for any obstacles that come their way.
